Scholarships

Dr. Roe B. Lewis Scholarship

Five (5) annual scholarships in the amount of $2,000 each are available: four (4) for undergraduate students and one (l) for graduate students. The purposes of the scholarships are to increase the knowledge and awareness of the importance of Tribal agriculture and natural resources and to assist Native American college students with their educational expenses. Applications are due December 29, 2023.

  • 1. Must be enrolled in Agriculture or Natural Resources at an accredited vocational school, technical school, college or university.

    2. Application must be submitted with the following documents and received by December 29, 2023 (No Exceptions).

    A. Proof of enrollment in a federally recognized band, nation or tribe.

    B. 2.5 or greater grade point average (GPA) on a scale of 4.0 for first year under graduate students; 3.0 or greater for all other applicants. (Must include an OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT.)

    C. Proof of registration for classes: Full-time student - 12 units; Part-time student - at least 6 units and working in a related field of agriculture or natural resources.

    D. Two (2) written recommendations from teachers, counselors, council persons, etc.(no family members).

    3. Consideration will be given to an applicant who is a member of a band, nation, or tribe that is represented through the “American Indian Organization” membership category of SWIAA.

  • The Scholarship winners will be chosen by the SWIAA Scholarship Selection Committee and will be judged on the above requirements. The scholarships will be awarded at the 36th Annual SWIAA Conference. The successful candidate(s) will be notified of the award and will be requested to make a presentation at the SWIAA Annual Conference.

Mario K. Marks Scholarship

Five (5) annual scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each are available for intermediate and high school tribal groups or individual tribal students. The purposes of the scholarships are to increase the knowledge and awareness of the importance of Indian agriculture and natural resources within lndian country and to highlight exceptional tribal intermediate and high school programs and students in the areas of agriculture and natural resources. Applications are due December 29, 2023.

    1. Must be in good academic standing with the currently enrolled intermediate and/or high school.

    2. Application must be submitted with the following documents and received by December 29, 2023. (No Exceptions).

      A. Proof of enrollment in a federally recognized band, nation or tribe.

      B. Two (2) written recommendations from teachers, counselors, council persons, etc. (No family members.)

    3. Consideration will be given to groups and individual applicants as members of a band, nation, or tribe that is represented through the "American Indian Organization" membership category of SWIAA.

    4. Funds may be used to cover your costs for hotel and other transportation expenses. Meals/other incidentals are the responsibility of the applicant.

  • The Scholarship winners will be chosen by the SWI.AA Scholarship Selection Committee and will be judged on the above requirements. The scholarships will be awarded at the 36th Annual SWIAA Conference. The successful candidate(s) will be notified of the award and will be required to make a presentation at SWIAA 36th Annual Conference (January) or at the Livestock Field Days (TBA).

SWIAA Conference Travel Scholarship

Thanks to a grant agreement with NRCS, SWIAA is able to offer 7 travel scholarships for Native American students to SWIAA regional events. This includes free registration for the event as well as a lodging and travel stipend.

  • Must be a Native American student studying agriculture or natural resource conservation OR a beginning farmer or rancher with less than 10 years of experience.

  • The travel scholarship is available to attend the 2023 Livestock Field Days Event, the 2024 Annual Conference, or the 2024 Livestock Field Days Event.

  • The Travel Scholarship includes a $400 lodging stipend as well as $175 mileage stipend.
